Right message, wrong recipient

Category : musings

Those of you who have my mobile number know that I recently had it changed due to unforeseen circumstances. I actually regretted having to change it since all my friends and relatives know that number and the danger lies on not being able to inform all  of the change. But yeah, it was necessary to have it changed, so there.

What I did not sign up for, was getting more messages from strangers who thought this number belonged to someone else. Methinks that this number used to belong to a person who most probably requested for a change of number, too.

So yeah, I get so many messages from strangers. Most ask for favors, and from the looks of it, the former owner of this number is a government employee. Some messages solicit business, usually offering loans, etc. When I get these messages, I just ignore them, and delete them from my inbox. At times, it gets to me especially when I receive them at unholy hours, only to find out that they’re missent messages, or at least sent to somebody they thought still owns the number.

So imagine my shock, when on Monday morning, at 6:52, I received this text message:

“Judge, ako to si Joann. Sobrang hirap nko. Cge, pumapayag nako dun sa gusto mong gawin sakin kapalit nung hinihiram ko sayo.”

This might even mean nothing, but if you were me, what would you think of the message, right?

Many things entered my mind, foremost of which was that there was a lost soul out there who didn’t know what to do and who thinks that the only way out of her predicament was to compromise her principles, and sell her soul to somebody who was out to take advantage of what she has to offer.

And so, I decided to answer her message. Told her she sent her message to the wrong person, and that I hope whatever it is she’s going through, she’ll be able to surpass without compromising herself. And then I prayed for her.

What would you have done if you were in my shoes?

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” – Matthew 18:20

This is going to be a quick post.

I just ask whoever reads this, to please offer a prayer for Ate Kara, Jeremy and Cassie who are all sick. (I am sick, too, with colds, while my body is practically aching all over). Ate Kara, I am not too worried about since she is already big and can tell us what ails her. She has colds and cough, and thankfully, no fever. However, the other two little ones, I can’t say the same.

First to develop colds was Cassie. Then yesterday, she developed cough, and then fever. When this happens, we already know it would be another full-blown asthma attack. Last night, Jeremy started sneezing. Later, he developed cough. And today, both have slight fever.

We’re on round-the-clock medications for them, which means nebulizations and other necessary meds. It actually pains me not to be able to take care of them since I have to work. What keeps me up is the thought, however, that in a matter of a few hours, I can already go home and take care of them myself. Tomorrow and Sunday, I will stay with them and watch over the two little ones.

Again, I am not asking for anything, just for you to please pray for the kids. And if you still can, to include Bong and me in your prayers, too, so we could take care of them well, and our bodies would be able to take the stress. The last time this happened to them, we had to spend days confined in a hospital. So you can probably understand why I worry too much.

But then, I believe in the Bible passage above…that if we all gather and pray together, the Lord Almighty will be in our midst.

Lord, I lift up to you Ate Kara, Jeremy and Cassie. You alone are the Great Healer and there is nothing You can not do. I claim their complete healing and restoration to good health. In Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.

Eksena sa jeepney

Category : musings

So without further ado, eto na sila…

Case in point: Itong umaga, may nakasakay ako sa jeepney. Magandang babae, nakauniporme, mestisa, makinis. The answer eludes me.

Sa English, two words: Thank you.

Go!

Bo, Cito and Gawad Kalinga

Category : musings, Work

Gawad Kalinga has been having its monthly get-togethers for its partners since May, I think. But last Wednesday, July 7, I decided to attend the Builders’ Night for the first time at the Rockwell Tent in Makati because the meet’s theme is Gawad Kalinga’s Child and Youth Development Programs, a cause which is closest to my heart since our Company is supporting its CYD program via Tambayani in its GK Manggahan Kawayanan Village.

(Background: Tambayani or Tambayan ng mga Bayani is a community-based youth and education program that benefits both in- and out-of-school youth. It’s inspired by a mission of “breeding heroes (or bayani) through education. Simply put, it’s a place where the future heroes of this country could converge, at the same time, it’s a program which would allow them to learn so they could grow up to be true leaders and heroes of this country.)

The Company-sponsored Tambayani in GK Manggahan Kawayanan is one of my projects. Construction of the structure is set to be finished in September this year so it’s also one of the things I am really excited about.

Anyway, the speakers that night included preacher Bo Sanchez, and former Agriculture Secretary, now a GK Champion, Cito Lorenzo.

I went there excited with the prospect of hearing Bo Sanchez speak because I receive daily Kerygma readings, and Kerygma is also one of the two organizations I support with a very small monthly contribution. I wasn’t disappointed, Bo Sanchez did deliver and his talk, albeit short, had a big impact on me, and I guess, the people present, too.

But what blew me over was Cito Lorenzo. I didn’t know much about him other than he was a former cabinet official (who was later implicated in the Agri scam) But listening to him, you would realize how his self-exile in the US has truly humbled him, and in his own words, afforded him some mental and moral introspection.

Below, I am including some of the things that struck me while listening to these two great inspirational speakers.

From Bo Sanchez:

-We can predict our future simply by analyzing what comes out of our mouths because words have power. (If everything that comes out of our mouths are negative things, then we can be sure that negative things will come our way. Simple but true.)

-Every time GK builds a home, a village, it builds hope, a future for this country. The work of GK is continuous, and that is why we can say that our future is brighter than our past.

-Even if we have made mistakes as an individual, and as a nation, we can erase those mistakes and then start all over again, just like those magic slates we used to draw on (which now have become magnetic slates) when we were still kids.

-We are not defined by our mistakes. We are defined by our destiny, and our destiny is actually something we can control if we have the right mindset.

-We have a God that wants to bless us. Problem is, a lot of people have this self-hatred spirituality. (He proceeds to tell of a man who prays and says the following: Lord, I am a man who doesn’t deserve your love. No, Lord, I am a little worm who doesn’t deserve Your love. No, Lord, I am not a worm, I am the bacteria in the worm and I don’t deserve Your Love. No Lord, I am not the bacteria in the worm…I am the virus that lives in the bacteria in the worm, and I don’t deserve Your love.) Yes, if you’ll think about it, it’s funny how we sometimes make ourselves too little in God’s eyes, and so, we miss the whole point…that God is so generous, He wants to bless us with His love, and He wants to bless our lives.

Bottomline is, we have to be open to receive God’s blessings if we want to experience His generosity.

Now, Cito Lorenzo. He spoke quite measuredly, giving the feeling that his experiences have really slowed him down, and that nothing mattered but the task at hand…that of rebuilding lives, not just homes through Gawad Kalinga.

From him, I got the following insights:

-True wealth is measured not in the number of zeros added to our bank accounts, the honors we have received when wearing the titles, nor the material things one collects; but the number of sincere and genuine friends one makes.

-What counts in life (are these): family, faith and country.

-As a leader, every person is not a statistic to be used but a human being…and regardless of his or her station in life he or she deserves our attention, compassion and concern by bringing out the best in him/her as an individual. For it is in building people that we truly build our nation.

-“Given the potentials and the goal of self-reliance, what can we as businessmen, professionals, and civic leaders do to help?

First, we must challenge the boundaries that keep our young people poor; to break through the glass ceiling that has conditioned him to believe that his or her highest aspiration is defined by the shanty that he lives in. Second, we must develop an entrepreneurial spirit among the youth – to inspire him to create value by making something from nothing. And lastly, we have to allow them to aim for greatness, to have pride and faith in self because God made no man second class in this world.

In a more concrete form, we can do this by increasing the scholarships for our poor but deserving students to at least 20% of the student population in the best universities here in Metro Manila and in the provinces.

Second, we must train teachers, mentor graduates, and assist in their dreams to be business owners rather than employees.

Third, we must encourage more business-inclined youth of our leading universities to embark on more “social entrepreneurship” projects that include a major component that shall benefit the poor.

Fourth, those of us with the means can partner with financial institutions to provide the needed working capital to make them succeed.

Most importantly, they must learn that business is about making sure that no one is left behind.”

(ok, it took me a few days before I could write this post because I had to transcribe the speech which I recorded, but I found out just yesterday that the speech is now posted here. haha! I totally forgot that this is now the internet era. Oh well.)

A lot of the things Cito said, we already know. But hearing them again actually awakened in me a deeper sense of responsibility for these kids who are going to be left behind when we are no longer here ourselves. How do we effectively train them to do better than us? The answer is not yet too clear, given the fact that many have become apathetic to the cause of educating our youth. After all, the harsh realities of our daily lives have taken over most of us. But while there are still organizations like Gawad Kalinga, and their partners—individuals, organizations, and corporations alike, who continue painstakingly the work of nation-building, I believe hope is not lost. And yes, our future is brighter than our past.

Lighthearted

Category : musings

This morning, the first thing I realized upon boarding the jeepney that would take Bong and me to Alabang and to work, was that you know you are already late when your commute-mates are no longer familiar to you.

Haha. Yep, I was late again because the little girl, Cassie, didn’t want to be left with our temporary ate, Ate Michelle (she was the first ate who took care of Cassie when she was only 1 month old, and left before she turned one to pursue her boyfriend. She just came back temporarily until we get two new angels who would take care of Jeremy and Cassie)

Anyhoo, just as the jeepney was leaving the terminal, there were two passengers, loudmouths, if I may say, who boarded the jeepney. Knowing the looming disturbance, I decided to put on my earphones and listen to music. Luckily, The CompanY’s Lighthearted album is loaded in my phone and so I listened to it. But I was just so engrossed at listening to the music blaring from my earphones that I didn’t get the chance to sleep during the commute. The album title says it all, you would really feel lighthearted when you listen to all the songs in that album. And I would go as far as saying that this is one of The CompanY’s best, if not the best, album ever.

Ok, so why did I say this? Because while listening to the songs, I couldn’t help but smile to myself and say that it’s indeed a wonderful day even when I knew that I would be 30 minutes late for work. I also remembered it’s my boss’ birthday, and I wanted to text her my greetings and wishes of a wonderful day even if I have already greeted her yesterday with a kiss (as she’s on birthday leave today)—to think we’re not exactly the best of friends…if you know what I mean. Oh, we get along, especially now that she has mellowed down a lot, but still, she’s the boss, and I am the lowly employee. Heehee.

And then it came to the song “Fifteen.” Yep, that Taylor Swift song (Idk, but I love Taylor Swift) which Cecile Bautista Reynoso sings with her daughter Chile…It kinda made me teary eyed. They rendered it in such a way that it’s like the mom telling her daughter what happens when she’s fifteen. And I felt it was another song I would sing to Ate Kara, just as the song “Slipping through my fingers” of Abba and sung in the movie Mamma Mia is the song I would probably sing when Kara gets married someday. Oh, Lighthearted, you have made me wax poetic about such things I would not normally think about when I commute to work.

But that’s really The CompanY for you. They’re such great singers whose renditions of other singers’ songs are even much better than the original. Ok, ok, I am biased. But I guess it also comes from the fact that this group, who I adore so much, also adores its fans as much as the fans adore them. Hindi sila mayabang at ma-ere considering they’ve been around for a long time. In fact, they’re celebrating their 25th year in show business this year with a concert at the Music Museum on October 16 and 30. Now that’s another show we won’t miss for the world. I have seen them perform a couple of times already and I guess I still can’t get enough of them.

Oh, and just in case you’re wondering, this is not a paid advert. But if they happen to read this and decide to give me 5 free tickets to their show, then that would just be perfect. Dance  Clap  Jump
